Plan Your Fake Tan

TIMING

Timing is everything! Don’t apply your tan just before a night out. Make sure you leave enough time for your tan to ‘take’. This may be anything from one hour to eight hours depending on the product you use. Best thing to do is to apply the self-tan several hours before you go to bed.

SURFACE PREPARATION

Fake tans need an even skin surface for an even application. Before applying your tan take a quick shower and exfoliate your skin. Pay special attention to dry areas such as your feet, elbows, knees and ankles.

DON’T GET CAUGHT ORANGE HANDED

Nothing gives away a fake tanner faster than orange hands – so to avoid staining your hands pop on a pair of thin latex gloves. It will also pay to apply a small amount of moisturiser to dry / thick skinned areas (such as your knees) as dry skin absorbs tanner at a faster rate, which can result in a patchy look.

GET TO WORK

Apply the tanner to one part of your body at a time. Using a small amount, start on your thighs and spread the lotion down each leg rubbing in a circular motion – massage it well into your skin. Repeat to the rest of your body. Use a tiny amount on your feet, ankles, knees and elbows. Finish up by removing your gloves and placing a small amount of tanner to a cotton ball and lightly sweeping is across the back of your hands (avoid your palms)

DRY OFF

Wait at least 15 minutes before putting on a loose robe and wait at least another 30 minutes before putting on any clothes for an even tan. Avoid water for three hours.

MAINTAIN YOUR LOOK

To help keep the colour as long as possible, daily apply a rich body moisturiser. Creams that contain alpha-hydroxy acids should be avoided as their exfoliating action will cause the tan to fade.
